Wheaton has been growing since Warren L. Wheaton arrived in 1837 and the railroad depot took on the family name in 1848. Homes built before roughly 1950 — particularly in the older blocks near downtown and along streets off College Avenue — commonly have plaster and lathe ceilings. Plaster is harder and more brittle than drywall. Cutting into it creates more dust, requires more care, and typically needs additional patching time. We use remodel-can fixtures designed for tight retrofit conditions and patch plaster with compatible materials. These jobs fall outside our standard flat rate; we always inspect and quote individually. The result is a clean, modern install that respects the original construction.
The postwar building boom produced many of Wheaton's ranch homes and split-levels, most with drywall ceilings at standard heights. These are clean retrofit projects — straightforward cuts, simple wire runs, and minimal patching. If your home has a finished basement from this era, ceiling heights may be lower (7–7.5 ft), which we plan around by selecting low-profile fixtures and confirming clearance above the drywall before quoting. Standard pricing applies to this era in nearly every case.
Danada West (1985–1990), Danada East (1988–1993), Academy Highlands (late 1980s–early 1990s), Hunters Glen (1990s), and Heirloom Acres (1980s) all share a similar profile: drywall throughout, 8- or 9-foot ceilings, and attic access above most main-floor rooms. These are ideal conditions for LED recessed lighting, and the great majority of projects in these subdivisions match our standard pricing exactly. Vaulted great rooms or two-story foyers occasionally require scaffolding or an adjusted quote, but we identify those up front.

Non-standard situations — plaster or lathe ceilings, ceiling heights over 9 ft, smart switches, or splitting one room into multiple zones — may require an adjusted quote, which we provide free of charge.

Homes with plaster ceilings — common in Wheaton's older downtown-area neighborhoods — may run a half-day longer depending on the extent of patching.
