Hoffman Estates grew from a 160-acre farm into a large northwest-suburban community — and most of its homes were built in the postwar decades when overhead lighting was an afterthought. We specialize in retrofitting modern LED recessed lights into the ranches, split-levels, and colonials that make up the village's neighborhoods, with clean installations that include all wiring, patching, and painting.
When Sam and Jack Hoffman broke ground on their first 262 homes in 1955, the village that would bear their name was mostly farmland along Higgins, Golf, and Roselle Roads. Over the next four decades, Hoffman Estates grew rapidly — population jumped from roughly 8,300 in 1960 to more than 22,000 by 1970 — producing wave after wave of subdivisions that now define the village's residential character.
The result is a community where the housing stock spans about four distinct eras: the original mid-1950s ranch and split-level homes in the Parcel A / Highland Boulevard area; the homes of the 1960s and early 1970s in subdivisions like High Point and Winston Knolls; the larger homes built into the 1970s in areas like Westbury; and the newer two-story construction in subdivisions like Bridlewood. Each era has its own ceiling construction and wiring considerations — and we're familiar with all of them.
Chicago Ceiling Lights has completed hundreds of recessed lighting installations across Chicago's suburbs. We serve all of Hoffman Estates, from the established neighborhoods near Golf Road to the Prairie Stone corridor near I-90. Most projects are scheduled within two weeks and finished in a single day.
The most common ceiling type across Hoffman Estates' postwar subdivisions is drywall — which is exactly what our standard pricing is built around. Whether you're in a 1,200-square-foot ranch from the 1960s or a two-story colonial from the 1990s, drywall gives us the cleanest path to a retrofit: we cut small openings, run wiring, install the cans, then patch and paint so the ceiling looks like the lights were always there.
Split-levels and bi-levels are especially common in the older sections of the village, particularly south of the Tollway. These homes have multiple floor levels and often lower ceiling heights on the middle or lower level — neither of which prevents a good recessed lighting installation, but both of which we account for when planning the layout and routing wiring efficiently.
Drop-tile ceilings are common in finished basements throughout the village — another ceiling type our standard pricing covers. Drop tile is actually the easiest to work with for recessed lighting: the tiles lift out, we install the fixture and run wiring above, and the tile goes back. No patching needed.
A note on older homes: The very earliest Hoffman Estates homes — those from the mid-1950s and early 1960s — could occasionally have plaster ceilings rather than drywall, though this is less common than in pre-war suburbs. Plaster is a non-standard ceiling type that may require an adjusted quote. We assess the ceiling before any work begins and will always tell you upfront if your situation falls outside the standard range.
Ceiling heights over 9 feet — found in some of the newer homes near Prairie Stone — also may require an adjusted quote, since taller ceilings add complexity to the installation. Standard pricing covers the overwhelming majority of Hoffman Estates homes.
Modern LED can lights sized for the rooms in Hoffman Estates homes — 6-inch for kitchens and living areas, 4-inch for hallways and bathrooms. Dimmable, long-lasting, and dramatically more efficient than the incandescent fixtures many ranch and split-level homes still carry.
Many Hoffman Estates ranches and split-levels still have a single dome light or ceiling fan doing the work of a whole room. We remove the old fixture, convert the space to recessed lighting, and patch the ceiling — so there's no trace of what was there before.
Upgrade your Hoffman Estates home with voice-controlled or app-scheduled lighting. Smart switches work with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. Note: smart/WiFi switches are an upgrade beyond our base dimmer-switch pricing and will be quoted separately.
Hoffman Estates' open floor plans — particularly common in 1980s and 1990s homes — reward a coordinated lighting approach. We design and install recessed lighting throughout every room for a cohesive look, with a 10% multi-room discount when you do three or more rooms.
$500 for the first light in a room, $200 for each additional. A kitchen with 6 lights: $1,500. Eight lights: $1,900. No hidden line items.
LED fixtures, dimmer switches, 3-way and rocker switches as needed, all wiring, patching, and basic painting. Standard pricing covers drywall, drop-tile, and open ceilings.
10% off when you do three or more rooms in one visit. Whole-home projects in Hoffman Estates are a great opportunity to update every space at once.
Ceilings over 9 ft, plaster or lathe walls, smart switches, or splitting a room into multiple switch zones may require an adjusted quote — we'll tell you before work begins.

Most Hoffman Estates projects are scheduled within two weeks of inquiry. Single-room installs are done in one day. We arrive on time and leave the space clean.
We install recessed lighting throughout all Hoffman Estates neighborhoods, including:
Each room is priced at $500 for the first light and $200 per additional light. That covers LED fixtures, dimmer switches, 3-way and rocker switches as needed, all electrical wiring, patching, and basic painting. A typical Hoffman Estates kitchen with 6–8 lights runs $1,500–$1,900. Projects covering 3 or more rooms receive 10% off. Non-standard situations — ceilings over 9 feet, plaster or lathe walls, smart/WiFi switches, or splitting a room into multiple zones — may require an adjusted quote.
Most of the ranch homes, split-levels, and bi-levels built in Hoffman Estates during that era have drywall ceilings, which is exactly what our standard pricing covers. We regularly work in these homes and know the construction patterns well. The main exception is if your home has plaster ceilings (less common but possible in the oldest sections) — that situation may require an adjusted quote. Either way, we assess the ceiling type before any work begins.
Split-levels and bi-levels have multiple floor levels and often shorter ceiling-to-floor heights on the lower level. Neither of these makes installation impossible — we work in these layouts regularly across the northwest suburbs. We route wiring to minimize drywall cuts and patch any openings before we leave. Standard pricing applies as long as ceiling heights are 9 feet or under and walls are drywall.
For a straightforward retrofit — replacing existing fixtures or adding lights to an existing circuit — most projects do not require a separate permit. The Village of Hoffman Estates does have an electrical permit process through its Code Enforcement office for larger electrical work. If your project scope warrants a permit, we'll let you know upfront and can quote that process separately.
A single-room project — say, a kitchen or living room — typically takes 3 to 5 hours. Multi-room installations across a whole home usually wrap up in one to two days. We schedule most Hoffman Estates projects within two weeks of your initial inquiry.
Everything: LED recessed fixtures, dimmer switches, 3-way and rocker switches as needed, all electrical wiring and connections, standard wall plates, patching of any drywall openings, and basic painting to match. Standard pricing applies to drywall, drop-tile, and open ceilings. Plaster or lathe walls, ceilings over 9 feet, smart/WiFi switches, or splitting a room into multiple switch zones may require an adjusted quote. Most projects fall squarely within the standard range — we'll confirm everything at your free consultation.
